One Knite Dive and Tavern (1970) men's tee

One Knite Dive and Tavern and Arcade thrived at 8th and Red River, the area that would eventually become Austin's live music district in the 1990s.

After it was officially christened "cool" by the Velvet Underground (whose primal guitar sound and urban noir lyrics, inspired the punk and alternative rock movements) the dive became THE place to be. It was just after the VU's show at the Vulcan Gas Company in 1969, that the band and their hedonistic ragtag followers traipsed over to the One Knite, took over the downtown dive and, according to witnesses, "debauchery ensued".

Originally it was a Tejano bar called the International Club, a Tejano bar, but starting in 1970, One Knite became known for its hanging junkyard decor and its illegal after-hours parties that often raged until dawn.

Hosting the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Marcia Ball, W.C. Clark, Angela Strehli, Paul Ray and the Cobras, Joe Ely and many, many more (who all played for tips, because there was "never a cover."} it built a following that embraced the coffin-shaped front door and $1 pitchers of beer.

The real Austin club scene was being born at this downtown, graffiti-covered club full of black leather and ripped shirts, which like like other scruffy downtown joints like Split Rail, Chequered Flag, Alamo Lounge were struggling to make the scene. One Knite was an Austin original.
