In the 1930s and 40s the Longhorn Waffle Shop  in Austin was the "All American Eating House".

Located on Congress Ave., the Shop featured steaks and chops, as well as "Mexican Foods": Enchiladas, Chili and Tamales, Chili con carne, Tacos and Eggs, Ranch Style. The desert specialty was Peach Cobbler.

But its namesake dish, the waffle, had flourished during the Depression era. Crispy waffles made from flour and water were inexpensive to prepare, so they were not just a popular dessert choice, but families had grown accustomed to stretching their food budget with meals like creamed chipped beef on waffles.
