Back Room - The Rock Club, Austin Texas, 1973-2006

The club on 2015 E. Riverside was an icon to the Austin music scene for more than three decades before closing in 2006. What began as a no-frills biker bar wound up giving fans access to musical performances from a young Stevie Vaughan to skate-rockers Riddlin Kids, metalheads like HeKill Three and nloco, and was the first Austin stop for the Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains.

The Back Room was where Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and Ice-T visited in the same month when nobody else was booking hip-hop. In 1990, Pariah plays their SXSW gig at the Back Room and eight major labels scouted the show. Following that performance, the band signed with Geffen.

in 1991, Pearl Jam brought grunge to the Back Room stage and fewer than 100 people attended. Then in 2005, The Back Room opened its beer garden in response to Austin's new smoking ban. Meet you in the Back Room!
