The VARSITY was a theatre at the corner of Guadalupe Street and W. 24th Street in Austin.
It was opened on November 20, 1936 with Fred MacMurray in “The Texas Rangers”. Over the years it went on to feature European films, camp classics and nostalgia pieces to lure in UT students. Generations of students and local residents were faithful patrons, and the landmark's exterior was decorated in 1980 with murals depicting scenes from films over the decades.
It played its last film, the 1970 John Wayne classic Red River in May, 1990. Despite ceasing operations as a theater, it remains an iconic presence along "The Drag" operating as a mixed use facility.
