Rad Skate Board Dude 1970s
The original skateboard boom began in the early 1960s when a handful of small companies began to market a new toy called the skateboard. It caught on quickly and enjoyed immediate success, like the yo-yo and hula-hoop. Skateboarders expressed themselves by mastering tricks and maneuvers. Soon came teams of talented youngsters touring the states to promote the sport. The first ever Skateboard Championships were held in Anaheim in July of 1965 and a national champ was crowned. The fad ebbed until 1973, when a new kind of skateboard wheel made from durable plastic was added. Smooth and quiet, the new wheels revolutionized the sport. The addition of sealed bearings led to much longer and quieter glides, so that by the mid-1970s, skateboarding was booming. All was cool. Rad. Gnarly.
