Some Austin places felt too odd, or too specific, even too alive to survive forever.
Tucked just off Sixth Street at 604 Neches, Lovejoys Tap Room & Brewery became one of downtown Austin’s true outsider institutions — equal parts dive bar, neighborhood clubhouse, punk refuge, and home-brew experiment. For nearly two decades, it stood just far enough away from the Sixth Street chaos to feel like a secret.
Inside, nothing was polished or refined. But that was the point.
There were mismatched tables, dim corners, regulars holding court for hours, and famously, a casket repurposed as a table. Home-brewed beer was often poured straight from the keg, accompanied by loud music, cigarette smoke, and conversations that drifted deep into the night. Free apples during Happy Hour somehow made perfect sense there. It was the kind of place that could only exist in old Austin.
When Lovejoy's closed in 2012, longtime patrons treated it less like a bar shutting down and more like losing a piece of the city itself. Writers and regulars described it as one of the last true watering holes left downtown before Austin’s rapid transformation accelerated for good.
This YesterCool design recreates the spirit of Lovejoy's from the late ’90s / early 2000s.
Because some places weren’t just bars. They were part of the city's personality.
